Skipping Thanksgiving

I heard a radio talk show the other day and they were discussing how early they recieved the first Christmas catalog and when they saw the first Christmas decorations and ads. Of course, when I was little, this never happened until after Thanksgiving, but now it has crept and crept earlier. I usually get my first Christmas catalog in August and now the decorations go up as soon as Halloween is over.

The wierd thing about it is that if you think about it..we now skip Thanksgiving. Is it because there is no real commercial value in it? True, you buy food, but other than that there are not usually thanksgiving cards and gifts...not much to market. Halloween, Christmas.

More an more restaurants stay open, so their employees can't be with their families and over the years, more and more stores that are really nonessential are staying open. I believe in our town CVS is going to be open, so those employees can't be with their families. I think it is more evidence of putting commerce over the value of the day.

I know this year I am so very thankful for Orthopedic Surgeons, my family, my friends, raised toilet seats (it's getting lower on my list), walking, driving, That I am out of debt in this economy, scrapbooking and my beagles.

I encourage you to not patronize stores on the holiday, to discourage the encroachment of Thanksgiving and leave me a comment about what you are thankful for.

Good Saturday morning to you Chunkygal !

It kind of wrecks the holidays for them to advertise for one before the other is finished. Takes the magic and the specialness out of it, and just makes it commercial.

I wish that the entire week from Dec. 24 - Jan 2. was closed for ALL store employees so that people could spend time with their families and friends and relax.

That is excellent that you are not in debt in thsi economy :)

I am grateful for my health, for my back getting better every day, for my loving friends, wonderful cat and for my parents, infuriating as they are :)

I agree w/you 100%! I am thankful for my family & friends, living in the USA and all the freedoms we enjoy, my faith, having more than we need, scrapbooking, our pets, work that is (usually) rewarding... Hmm, I feel a scrapbook page coming on!

I completely agree! I heard last week that Santa was going to arrive at a mall in Chattanooga LAST WEEKEND and I was horrified! He needs to stay at the North Pole until after Thanksgiving! I'm surely not planning to shop on Thanksgiving Day (barring unforeseen emergency, such as someone getting really sick... and I hope that doesn't happen!) I'm thankful for my faith, my family, my friends, for living in a free country, for this beautiful place I am privileged to call home.
Hugs!
